Analysis of Protected Agriculture and its Socio-Environmental Impacts in Three Municipalities of the Sierra Nevada in Puebla, Mexico
Abstract
This research investigates the temporal dynamics of crop production surfaces, specifically focusing on basic crops and protected agriculture dedicated to commercial crops, within three municipalities located in the Sierra Nevada region of Puebla, Mexico. Employing a quantitative methodology, data were gathered from official agricultural sources to examine trends and their associated socio-environmental implications. Results indicate a decline in the surface area dedicated to maize and bean production, while the practice of protected agriculture exhibits a persistent expansion, particularly in the cultivation of flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Moreover, the study highlights an inverse correlation between commercial and basic crop cultivation, underscoring significant adverse socio-environmental consequences. To tackle these challenges, it is crucial to acknowledge the cultural dimension inherent in traditional production systems and to implement sustainable agricultural practices, such as the integration of milpa cultivation with fruit trees. Furthermore, the adoption of more effective strategies aimed at mitigating the environmental impact stemming from plastic usage in protected agriculture, and the promotion of integrated approaches encompassing social, economic, environmental, and cultural aspects, are recommended. Ultimately, this study establishes a robust foundation for comprehending the intricate interplay between protected agriculture, food security, and sustainability within the studied region.
