Migration and the media. Newspaper articles on the migration phenomenon to the United States
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to analyze how certain national and international newspapers depict the international migration passing through Mexico on its way to the north between 2016 and 2019. A total of 196 newspaper articles were selected for analysis. The objective is to examine how these newspapers subjectively perceive this migratory phenomenon, which can be influenced by editorial criteria, political ideologies, or specific interests. The newspaper articles were categorized as neutral, positive, or negative, aiming to provide a clearer and comprehensive understanding of the media’s stance on international migration. Of 96 newspaper articles, 56% were considered neutral, 26% positive and 17% negative. Among national sources, 64% are neutral and 14% positive, and among foreign sources, 51% are neutral and 32% positive. Foreign sources have twice the percentage of notes considered positive.
