Foreign direct investment and its impact on unemployment in Latin America
Abstract
The study addresses unemployment as a global challenge and aims to determine how foreign direct investment affects unemployment in Latin America. It uses data from the World Bank’s World Development Indicators (2023) with a sample of 476 data from 1995 to 2022 covering 17 Latin American countries, classified according to the ATLAS method, and a panel design with tests such as the Hausman, Breusch-Pagan and Wooldridge tests was used. The results show that foreign direct investment (FDI) reduces unemployment at the global level and in high-income countries (HICs), but is not statistically significant in upper middle-income countries (UMICs) and lower middle-income countries (LMICs). Likewise, exports have a negative effect on unemployment, i.e., as exports increase, the unemployment rate decreases because they increase the productive matrix of a country, which in turn creates jobs.
