Origins of cooperativism in Mexico. Notes to historicize the other economy

Keywords: Cooperativism; Mexico; Social and Solidarity Economy.

Abstract

The Social and Solidarity Economy (ESS in Spanish) encompasses a wide range of associative practices that seek to reproduce life in an organized, solidarity-based manner and with non-authoritarian work processes. Cooperativism is one of the longest-lived, most widespread, and richest expressions of ESS, but it is also complicated to situate within because of the diversity of cases and paths that many cooperatives have followed. Reconstructing the origins of Mexican cooperativism, which is a history often neglected in historiographical production, will allow us to situate it in relation to the diverse and abundant practices of social and solidarity economy that exist in the country. In this article we propose to review the origins of cooperativism in Mexico up to the time of its first national regulation in 1927, marking the tensions that it had in the movement between autonomous productive organizations and those linked to the State initiative political power. This exercise is presented as an axis to trace the multiple veins and influences in the origins of the Mexican cooperatives and their links with the ESS. The text is presented in the form of notes by locating a discontinuity in the historical movement during the years of the Mexican Revolution. This follow-up was based on the two fundamental works on the history of Mexican cooperativism, Tratado de Cooperativismo Mexicano (1952) by Rosendo Rojas Coria and La formación del movimiento cooperativo en México: antecedentes organizacionales y momento constitutivo (2014) by Juan José Rojas Herrera.
