Abstract

This study aimed to assess the response of Daphnia magna to sequential exposure to Metsulfuron-methyl, a widely used herbicide. The methodology involved isolating organisms from a water reservoir at the La María experimental campus, followed by their transfer to a controlled aquatic environment. Population development was monitored by quantifying new generations of juveniles every 10 days, revealing an exponential growth from 65% to 68% at 40 and 50 days, respectively. Controlled exposure mortality to Metsulfuron-methyl indicated a direct relationship between the herbicide dose and the survival of D. magna, with concentrations exceeding 2000 mg/L for 72 hours resulting in mortality exceeding 50%, reaching a peak of 72% at 3500 mg/L. Exposure to 2000 mg/L for 10 days reduced the reproduction rate to 6%, while 15 and 20 days resulted in complete inhibition. These findings highlight the sensitivity of D. magna to elevated concentrations of Metsulfuron-methyl and suggest significant impacts on its development, survival, and reproduction. This study contributes to understanding the effects of this herbicide on aquatic organisms, emphasizing the importance of environmental regulations and sustainable agricultural practices.
