The therapeutic obstinacy of health professionals in the care of patients in palliative care
Abstract
To conduct this research, we evaluated how therapeutic overreach by healthcare professionals affects the quality of life, comfort, and dignity of geriatric patients at the end of life in the context of palliative care in Ecuador. Special selection criteria were established for the study methodology to ensure the relevance and analysis of ongoing information. The PRISMA method was also developed to demonstrate the identification, screening, identity, and inclusion strategy. The study also reviewed 22 studies, including written reports to identify similarities and differences in the use of conceptual frameworks. The results showed that the therapeutic approach in palliative care has a considerable impact on patient quality of life, the emotional and physical burden on healthcare personnel, and the economic impact on the healthcare system and families. It was found that 30% of the studies analyzed indicated that the extension of pain and decreased quality of life are direct consequences of the overuse of medical interventions in terminally ill patients. It was concluded that the expenses associated with these practices showed a considerable financial burden for the health system and families, with ICU stays ranging from $800 to $1,500 per day, in addition to invasive treatments that exceeded $5,000 for each procedure.
