Female Spiritual Leadership and the Memory of Martyrdom in Dialogue of Carmelites: A cinematic analysis
Abstract
This article aimed to analyze Dialogue of Carmelites as a cinematic representation of Christian martyrdom and female spiritual leadership, in continuity with ecclesial tradition and as a cultural testimony of universal reach. An interdisciplinary methodology of historical, theological, literary, musical, and cinematic character was applied, integrating documentary analysis of the French Revolution with a hermeneutical interpretation of von Gertrud Le Fort’s novel, Georges Bernanos’s play, Francis Poulenc’s opera, and its film adaptation. The study examined the film as a visual catechesis, where the march to the guillotine was reinterpreted as a communal liturgy, and Blanche’s initial fear was transformed into courage through shared grace. This testimony was also compared with other communal martyrdoms and addressed female spiritual leadership from Teresa of Saint Augustine to Edith Stein, concluding that the work constitutes a spiritual and cultural memorial of hope.
