Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the differences and relationships between physical performance and theoretical performance of sports referees according to their competitive category. A quantitative, descriptive-comparative, and correlational design was employed with a sample of 70 referees from different categories. Data were collected using the Yo-Yo Test to assess aerobic endurance, the 30-meter sprint test to measure running speed, and a Video Test to evaluate theoretical performance in refereeing decision-making. The results indicated that most referees achieved an Elite level in aerobic endurance, with second-category referees covering the greatest distances. In the sprint test, third-category referees recorded the fastest times, whereas fourth-category referees obtained the highest scores in the Video Test. The correlational analysis revealed weak but statistically significant relationships between physical and theoretical variables, including a negative association between aerobic endurance and theoretical performance, as well as a positive relationship between sprint time and Video Test scores. In conclusion, the findings demonstrate that both physical and theoretical performance vary significantly according to refereeing category, highlighting the importance of comprehensive, differentiated, and context-sensitive training programs that integrate physical, cognitive, and formative dimensions of refereeing.
