Abstract

Competitive sport during childhood involves psychological demands that may influence the perception of performance. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between cognitive emotion regulation strategies and perceived performance in youth hockey players. A quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional, and descriptive-correlational study was conducted. Forty male under-12 players from a developmental club in Puyo (Pastaza, Ecuador) participated. Cognitive emotion regulation was assessed using the Spanish version of the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire for children (CERQ-Sk), considering adaptive strategies (acceptance, positive refocusing, refocus on planning, positive reappraisal, and putting into perspective) and maladaptive strategies (self-blame, rumination, catastrophizing, and blaming others). Perceived performance was measured using the Perceived Performance in Sport Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha), Pearson correlations, and multiple linear regression were calculated. The results showed that adaptive strategies were positively associated with perceived performance, whereas maladaptive strategies were negatively associated, all with statistical significance. In the predictive model, the average of adaptive strategies was significantly associated with perceived performance, and the average of maladaptive strategies emerged as a negative predictor, with no relevant contributions from years of practice or training hours. It is concluded that the cognitive regulation profile is significantly linked to perceived performance in youth hockey, supporting the implementation of training interventions aimed at strengthening adaptive strategies and reducing maladaptive patterns in early competitive contexts.
