Abstract

Using a cross-sectional quantitative design, this study assessed the spiritual well-being of the evangelical Christian community in Chile during the COVID-19 pandemic (June–July 2020) in a convenience sample (N = 194, mostly from the Biobío Region), with Paloutzian and Ellison's Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS). The community reported high levels of spiritual (SWB), religious (RWB) and existential (EWB) well-being. The central finding was a partial dissociation: participants who reported anxiety, stress or family problems scored lower, with the largest effect on existential well-being (Cliff's delta = 0.61) and a smaller one on religious well-being (delta = 0.33), which nonetheless fell within the high range; adults aged 36 or older scored higher than those aged 35 or younger (delta = 0.48–0.49). No differences were found by sex or isolation status. High well-being co-occurred with near-universal participation in virtual religious services, although the cross-sectional design and the near-absence of variance in participation preclude causal inference. To our knowledge, this is one of the first studies of spiritual well-being in this community in Latin America. These findings are exploratory and should be interpreted with caution; their main limitation is the convenience-based, regional nature of the sample.
