Abstract
Cardiac surgical procedures in Jehovah’s Witness patients pose clinical, bioethical, and legal challenges due to the refusal of blood transfusions. To analyze the efficacy, safety, and medico-legal implications of cardiac surgery without blood transfusions. A qualitative documentary study was conducted through a review of scientific literature, legal regulations, national and international case law, and relevant institutional documents. The evidence analyzed indicates that transfusion refusal is grounded in patient autonomy, freedom of religion, and informed consent, requiring an individualized assessment of the bioethical principles involved. Furthermore, cardiac surgery without blood products constitutes a clinically viable alternative when appropriate perioperative management strategies are implemented. Cardiac surgery without blood transfusions constitutes a clinically viable alternative that is compatible with the legal and bioethical principles applicable to Jehovah’s Witness patients.
