Abstract

The aim of the study was to analyze the relationship between sport commitment and perceived performance in adolescent female athletes from the canton of Santa Cruz (Galápagos), considering selected sociodemographic and sport-related variables. A quantitative study was conducted using a non-experimental, cross-sectional design with a correlational-explanatory scope. A total of 180 female athletes aged 14 to 17 participated. The instruments used were the Sport Commitment Scale (11 items; current commitment and future commitment factors), the Perceived Sport Performance Questionnaire (5 items), and a sociodemographic form. The analyses included descriptive statistics, internal consistency, and Pearson and Spearman correlations. The results showed high levels of current commitment (M = 4.11, SD = 0.56), future commitment (M = 4.24, SD = 0.51), and perceived performance (M = 3.99, SD = 0.61). Both dimensions of commitment were positively and significantly associated with the five indicators of perceived performance; these associations were stronger for future commitment (r = .44 to .53, p < .01) than for current commitment (r = .29 to .37, p < .01). Likewise, years of practice, training hours, and competitive level showed positive correlations with the main variables. It is concluded that sport commitment, especially its future component, constitutes a relevant psychological correlate of perceived performance in adolescent female athletes, providing useful evidence for the design of retention strategies, psychosocial support, and context-specific training in Santa Cruz.
