Abstract

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a fundamental role in the economy by creating jobs and driving growth. However, their development depends on internal factors that require further evidence. This study examines the contribution of innovation, sustainability, and human talent management practices to the growth of commercial SMEs in Morona canton, Morona Santiago Province, Ecuador. The research adopts a quantitative approach, with a descriptive–correlational–explanatory scope and a non-experimental cross-sectional design. The population consisted of 60 commercial SMEs. A structured 32-item survey was administered using a five-point Likert scale, organized into blocks according to the study variables. Among the main findings, 85.4% of business growth is explained by the three independent variables; innovation showed the greatest statistical weight (0.722), followed by human talent management (0.413). Sustainability had a positive effect (0.118), but this effect was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). VIF and tolerance values ruled out multicollinearity. It is concluded that SMEs should prioritize investment in innovation as a strategic driver of growth, strengthen human talent management, and incorporate sustainable practices that generate long-term competitive advantages, providing evidence to inform decision-making.
